Connect your Claude
Link your own Claude account so it can read, measure, and mark up your drawings.
Vellum does not run its own AI model or bill you for tokens. You bring your own Claude account and authorize it to work on your drawings through Vellum's MCP connector.
Connecting
- 1Open the assistant
Click Assistant in the toolbar, then Connect. You can also use Connect Claude in your user badge menu.
- 2Authorize in Claude
The Connect button opens claude.ai with Vellum pre-filled as a custom connector. Review the permissions and authorize.
- 3Let Claude control this tab
Back in Vellum, tick Let my connected Claude control this tab. A green dot in your user badge confirms the connection.
What your Claude can then do
- Perceive the sheet: read entities, find text, extract schedules and title blocks.
- Measure to scale, and calibrate the scale from a known dimension.
- Draw lines, polylines, rectangles, circles, arcs, clouds, callouts, text, and true dimension entities.
- Offset geometry for setbacks and buildable lines.
- Count symbols and sweep for similar ones, then build takeoff quantities and export them as CSV.
- Compare two sheets and cloud what changed between revisions.
- Draft documents: RFIs, punch lists, and review summaries.
How your work stays safe
- One instruction, one undo. Multi-step work is wrapped in a batch, so a single undo reverses the whole task.
- Every change is reported. Each write returns a manifest listing exactly what was created or changed.
- Nothing is invented. Dimensions, marks, and tags must trace back to something read on the drawing.
- Preview first. Write operations support a dry run that reports what would change without committing it.
- No drawing content is stored. Assistant memory holds derived metadata only, namespaced per project.
Warning
Your Claude can only act while a Vellum tab is open with Let my connected Claude control this tab enabled. Untick it at any time to revoke access instantly.
