Quick start

Create a project, upload a PDF, draw your first annotation, and export it.

This guide takes you from an empty workspace to an exported markup in five steps.

  1. 1
    Create a project

From the projects hub, choose New project and give it a name. Projects group related drawings together.

  2. 2
    Upload a PDF

Drag a PDF onto the upload area or use the upload button. Vellum imports the document and processes its vector geometry in the background.

  3. 3
    Open the editor

Click the project thumbnail to open the editor. The drawing loads onto the canvas.

  4. 4
    Draw an annotation

Pick a tool from the toolbar — try Polyline (L) — and click points on the canvas. Press Enter or Esc to finish.

  5. 5
    Export

Open the export menu and choose PDF, DXF, or PNG. Your markups are written into the output.

Keep tools active

By default a tool stays active after you draw, so you can place several shapes in a row. Press Esc or pick Select (V) when you're done.
