Projects & uploads
Organize drawings into projects and bring PDFs into Vellum.
Projects are the top level of organization in Vellum. Each project contains one or more PDF documents and all the markups made on them.
The projects hub
The hub is the first screen you see after signing in. It lists your projects, surfaces recently opened drawings, and provides search so you can jump straight to a document.
- Create a new project to start a fresh set of drawings.
- Search filters your projects by name as you type.
- Recent shows drawings you opened most recently for one-click access.
Uploading a PDF
Drag a PDF onto the upload area, or use the upload control. An upload dock shows progress while the file transfers and Vellum imports its pages.
During import, Vellum analyzes the document's vector content so geometry can be snapped to and extracted later. Large drawings continue processing in the background — you can start working as soon as the pages render.
Vellum works best with vector PDFs (drawings exported from CAD). Scanned/raster PDFs still display and can be marked up, but features like object extraction and snapping to imported geometry rely on vector content.
Opening and sharing
Click any project to open the editor. To bring in collaborators, use an invite link — opening it drops the recipient straight into the shared document. See Sharing & roles.
